“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them” – Walt Disney
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Ever wonder what your dreams are or even how to pursue them? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho helps us answer this question by leading us on a journey through the desert in search for that fulfillment we eagerly desire.
The amazing thing is that Paulo Coelho also realized his dreams while struggling to get his books noticed. His parents suggested a career in law, persuading him to abandon his dream as a writer. He took their suggestion and dropped out after 1 year, understanding he was living someone else’s dream and not his. After the failure of his first few books, The Alchemist finally saw success as it changed many lives. Will Smith, Madonna, Pharrell Williams and many others claim the book as their favorite.
Here are 6 truths the book teaches that have helped me to pursue my dream.
The World’s Greatest Lie
The lie: at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate. But the truth is that our situations are not controlled by fate. If they were, we would be able to see into the future at will. Yet we can’t because we can do something about our lives. Take charge of your life! You are not here to let the world push you like a rag doll. You have hopes, dreams, and a soul. Some people are Reactive and react to whatever happens in the world. And others are Proactive and make the world happen.
Love Never Keeps A Man From Pursuing His Personal Legend
A Personal Legend is a thing you have always wanted to accomplish, it is the treasure waiting for you to take. If a person abandons that pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t true love. 1 Corinthians 13:4 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” Encourage each other in your search for the treasure. If you don’t search for your fulfillment then regret will only result in regret.
First is year 1, where your happiness and love with each other is going great. Then, in year 2, you’ll remember your treasure. The omens will speak to you about it, but you’ll try to ignore it. And in year 3, the omens will constantly remind you of your treasure. You will walk night after night worrying about the fact you should’ve trust more in your love for your spouse. Then “the omens will tell you that your treasure is buried forever.” Finally, in year 4 the omens will leave you and so will your career. You may have a lot of money to sit on afterward, but you’ll regret over how you never pursued your Personal Legend.
People Are Afraid To Pursue Their Most Important Dreams
They feel they don’t deserve them or are unable to achieve them. The only limitations are the ones you believe. The flea story is a great example:
Fleas have been known to jump 13 inches vertically. Place a couple of fleas in a jar and they’ll jump out. Place a lid on the jar and they will repeatedly hit the lid in an attempt to escape. After about 20 minutes, the fleas learn that they can’t escape and stop jumping high to avoid banging their head. Take the lid off and they will not try to escape. They will continue to believe that they can’t. Similar to us when we have a goal. We hit an obstacle and believe we are unable to achieve it, but if we continue to believe and persist in our goals and dreams, we will accomplish them.
Every Second Of The Search Of Your Personal Legend Is An Encounter With The Most High
I rely on Him for help and guidance to it. I believe faith is a huge factor on the journey to my Personal Legend. It keeps me going by giving me the hope I need to continue pushing through.
Most People See The World As A Threatening Place And Because They See It That Way, It Becomes That Way For Them.
Some people see the glass half empty and some see it half full. The lesson is that we see things how we think things are, not how they actually are. Use your thoughts to control your reality, instead of letting reality control your thoughts.
Before you realize your dream, the Soul of the World tests everything that you learn along the way.
It does this, not through evil, but so you can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons you’ve learned while moving toward that dream. This is the point most people give up. One dies of thirst just when the palm trees have appeared on the horizon. The search begins with beginner’s blessing to show you that you are on the right path. Then you hit an obstacle and it ends with the victor being severely tested. So don’t give up near the end.
